John Exline grew to manhood in Friends Cove, Pa. See early
History of Tuscarawas Co. , Ohio. John Exline was one of the
early pioneers of the military lots in NE quarter of Sandy town-
ship of Tuscarawas County, Ohio. This history says that John
came from Huntington, Co. , Pa. It may be that he had re-
moved there for a short time before coming to Ohio. He and
his family came by the toilsome wagon journey over the moun-
tains about 1816 and made his presence known by stopping at
Mr. Jackson's cabin asking for a fire. He was surprised the
next day, by neighbors who flocked in at his camp on lot #13 and
completed a cabin for him before daylight closed. Mr. Exline
belonged to the Presbyterian church. He died on his farm.
John Gettis Exline collected the information on his family as
well as a start toward an history of the Exline family. This
material, he generously donated the authors for incorporation
in this book. He says "Older members of the family always
said that John Exline came from Bedford County, Pa. " The
will of Michael Ott father of Elizabeth is filed in Bedford Coun-
ty, Pa. When John and Elizabeth Exline settled on their farm
in Sandy township, two miles east of Sandyville, there were
only three other settlers in that township. Two of these were
John Farver and Wallen Miller. John is buried in the old com-
munity cemetery in Sandyville, Ohio and his headstone bears
this inscription "John Exline died October 6, 1844 aged 54 years.
